Style: Alpine Castle Romance
Some hotels have a view. This one has a lake so still and clear it looks painted. Rosewood Schloss Fuschl sits on the shores of Lake Fuschl, a four-kilometre stretch of Alpine water in the heart of the Salzkammergut region. The castle itself dates back to 1461, originally built as a hunting lodge, and after a meticulous redesign it reopened in 2024 as one of Austria’s most talked-about luxury addresses. Inside, the centuries are still there, but so is everything you want right now: soft soothing colours, underfloor heating and expansive windows that frame the mountains like a painting you forgot to buy.
The 98 rooms, suites and freestanding lakefront chalets all carry that same balance of historical weight and contemporary ease. Bathrooms feature marble baths and rainshowers, and waking up in a lakeview suite to that particular pale Alpine light feels quietly unreasonable in the best possible way.
Food
Dining here is a full programme. The Schloss Restaurant celebrates Austrian culinary heritage with the kind of precision you expect from a property of this calibre. On warmer days, the Seeterrasse pulls everything outside to the water’s edge. The Sisi Tea Salon serves a Mozart Afternoon Tea that leans into the region’s musical legacy without taking itself too seriously, and the Vinothek is worth an evening on its own. The Schloss Bar, all dark wood and well-chosen spirits, is the right place to end the night.
Spa
The Asaya Spa offers massages and revitalising facials designed to restore balance and a deep sense of wellbeing, alongside an indoor pool, sauna and state-of-the-art fitness facilities. The herbal harmony massage, drawing on regional Alpine herbs, is particularly worth booking in advance. After a morning in the water and an afternoon on the treatment table, Salzburg feels very far away and that is entirely the point.
Environment
The hotel sits in the heart of the Salzkammergut region, surrounded by lakes, rivers, forests and limestone mountains. Salzburg is roughly 30 minutes by car, close enough for a day of Mozart and Mirabell gardens, far enough that the castle feels like its own world. The roster of activities celebrates the region’s rich heritage: guided herb hikes, traditional Zille boat rides across the lake to the historic castle fishery, hot air balloon rides over the alpine peaks. Winter brings a different kind of stillness entirely.
