Hidden behind an unmarked blue façade in Lapa’s embassy quarter, you’ll find a stunning, relatively new, boutique hotel; Tarabel Lisbon. The nineteenth‑century mansion, reimagined by French designer Rose Fournier, houses just nine suites arranged along rambling corridors and around terraced gardens. Inside, rooms are wrapped in soft greens and botanical prints, punctuated by antiques, straw hats and curios gathered from Marrakech. Tassels cover the door locks, wicker lampshades cast dappled shadows and orange‑flower diffusers scent the air. Suites are filled with generous beds dressed in crisp white linen, blackout blinds and quiet ceiling fans; bathrooms invite long, shared soaks in roll‑top tubs with double basins and piles of monogrammed towels. The mood is calm and cocooning, more like a friend’s well‑travelled home than a typical hotel.
Food
Breakfast stretches lazily across the morning on the river‑view veranda: scrambled eggs cooked simply with butter, homemade jams served in vintage teacups, and pastries and fruit arranged on French gilded plates. Chef Afonso Blazquez Raposo presents a contemporary Portuguese and Mediterranean menu, with dishes such as lime‑cured scallops and delicate tuna tartare. Lunch can be brought to a poolside lounger, and dinner is served by candlelight on the terrace, with tables dressed as carefully as the rooms. The honesty bar offers Portuguese wine and spirits whenever you feel like a drink.
There is no dedicated spa; the focus is on slow living. The heated pool, tiled in jade‑green and shaded by a jacaranda tree, invites languid swims even in cooler months. Some suites open onto private terraces with freestanding baths, Molton Brown products and vintage mirrors. If you want a treatment, massages can be arranged in your room, but most guests prefer to linger in the gardens with a book or soak in the deep tubs.
Environment
Tarabel is perched on Estrela Hill, overlooking the Tagus and flanked by embassy gardens. Humberto Delgado Airport lies about 25 minutes away by car, and the team can arrange private transfers. Cais do Sodré station is roughly ten minutes by taxi, and Lapa’s leafy streets make a car unnecessary once you arrive. Step outside to board the historic Tram 28, wander to Jardim da Estrela or the Basílica da Estrela, or explore neighbourhood cafés and antique shops.
